New information bearing on this question came to light a year later when Guillermo Bernal Romero presented a paper to the Palenque Round Table in July, 1999. Bernal had assembled the broken pieces of a hieroglyphic tablet discovered by Palenque archaeologist Arnoldo González Cruz in Temple XVI and now known as the K'an Tok Tablet. The incription concerns the investiture of a series of officials by rulers of Palenque over a period of more than 300 years.
Bernal Romero's paper, "Análisis epigráfico del Tablero de K'an Tok, Palenque, Chiapas", is in press. These observations are based on the abstract that was published in the Round Table program and on hearing the presentation itself. |
