| It was in Tikal, Guatemala, that Merle planned to spend a weekend in 1962 and ended up staying to work on the archaeological project there underway. The paper rubbings which she did of the Tikal monuments so impressed one of the leading Maya scholars that he suggested she do rubbings at all the other sites of the Peten region. |
