In his last years, Pakal the Great had the satisfaction of knowing that his succession was secure for two generations to come. And, in turn, K'inich Ahkal Mo' Nahb' (shown here in a stone tablet from Temple XIX) received his legitimacy by virtue of direct descent from his grandfather, Pakal. That is why the two of them are depicted side-by-side on the newly discovered monument from Temple XXI (even though Pakal was long since dead by the time his grandson grew to manhood).
