Structure 19, Yaxchilan. 1979 (photo: Merle Greene Robertson). According to Carolyn Tate (1992:182): "Structure 19 was Maudslay's House H. In 1886, Désiré Charnay camped there. Also called the Labyrinth, Structure 19 closes off the northwest corner of the Main Plaza. At the present time, the passage through its dark corridors, up a narrow, pitch-black stairway, and under its steep-vaulted lintels is the dramatic transition from the vistor's own world into the ancient ruins of Yaxchilan." |
