Left glyphic cartouche of wooden lintel lintel, Dzibanche. The left cartouche bears a Distance Number (badly damaged by a crack in the wood), leading from the accession of a local lord to the title of kaloomte'. Kaloomte', as identified by Simon Martin, appears to have been the ancient Maya equivalent of 'emperor', and appears to designate lords who ruled more than one kingdom. Dzibanche can thus be described as an imperial capital (photo and caption: Stanley Guenter).
