The first war in which Palenque was involved is mentioned on the Hieroglyphic Stairs of House C (figure 1). The chronology of the hieroglyphic stairs was problematic for a very long time until Floyd Lounsbury suggested a major revision of the chronology The second date on the hieroglyphic stairs is 9.8.5.13.9 6 Lamat 1 Sip (April 23, 599) and records a ch'akba 'decapitation' event against an unknown individual (Orejel 1990; Looper and Schele 1991). The subject of the sentence is named as ?-xo lu-ku-a and carries a title that usually occurs with names of lineage founders. If this individual is a historical person, and the reconstruction of the date as well as other contextual criteria would support this, he probably carries this title as an indication that he is in the lineage of the Calakmul king named a few blocks later. This is supported by the y-ahaw te 'his tree-lord' title that connects his name with that of the king of Calakmul.
