The different elements that make up this elaborate mask appear to be a fusion of the traits that define the two raptorial-beaked, avian-zoomorphic images incised on the shoulders of the Las Limas Figure (figure 4b). These Las Limas Figure shoulder images were interpreted by Joralemon as a symbolic depiction of the celestial realm of a trilevel cosmos (personal communication, 1983). |
