"Shield of the Sun God" certainly revered his illustrious predecessor. His own rulership name - K'inich Janahb' Pakal - is recorded on the K'an Tok Tablet preceded by his pre-accession name - U Pakal K'inich. The resulting duplication of K'inich reveals that he took the entire name of his great-grandfather upon his accession. For that reason it is proper to call him K'inich Janahb' Pakal II.
