Bernal's conclusion? The prince U Pakal K'inich from Temple XIX had taken the name of Palenque's greatest king, K'inich Janahb' Pakal, when he himself became ruler of Palenque. Unfortunately the glyphs just before the key passage of the K'an Tok tablet are effaced, but there is certainly room for "U Pakal K'inich" in the block preceding "K'inich Janahb' Pakal". In fact it is possible to discern the symbol for k'inich at the bottom of the broken glyph. The evidence was sufficient for Bernal. He dubbed the new Palenque ruler U Pakal K'inich Janahb' Pakal.

The name K'inich Janahb' Pakal is in the lower left. In this photograph one can more clearly see the janahb' flower infixed in middle of the pakal shield to make janahb' pakal. The next glyph block to the right is the Palenque emblem glyph in its rabbit-skull variant, read as "Holy Palenque Lord". Above the emblem glyph is the damaged Upakal K'inich, with clear traces of the k'inich remaining. (Photo: Joel Skidmore.)
