Caption identifying the right-hand figure in the tablet, who is named in the glyph on the left as Yok ? Tal. (Some epigraphers have suggested that the unidentified sign is "Nen", but Project hieroglyphics expert David Stuart does not accept this reading.) The second glyph is a title, yajaw k'ak', "Lord of Fire". This important subordinate title was also borne by Chac Zutz' from the Tablet of the Slaves, who at one time was thought to be a ruler of Palenque. The importance of Yok ? Tal in the present case is graphically illustrated by the fact that his hand literally supports that of the ruler in the sculpture of the tablet. (Photo: Mark Van Stone.)
