Detail of the hand of the secondary figure, a "Lord of Fire", supporting the hand of the Palenque ruler K'inich Ahkal Mo' Nahb' III. Lord of Fire seems to have been a military title. It was also carried by Chak Sotz' (Chac Zutz), the protagonist of the Tablet of the Slaves hieroglyphic text, who was once thought to be a ruler of Palenque. The Lord of Fire of Temple XIX also appears on the alfarda tablet outside the structure, and he is depicted prominently on the hieroglyphic platform. (Photo: Mark Van Stone.).
