Across time, geography and culture, human groups have often felt the need to develop hand gesture conventions for the purpose of complementing or substituting verbal communication or to convey coded messages accessible only to those familiar with the code. Two of the better known examples, would be Buddhist mudras (below) and the secretive Masonic hand gestures.
