In the past few years, I've had the opportunity to work closely with both of the Chavez brothers and discuss at length their vision of the altarpieces' role in the life of the community. While describing the arrangement of the altarpieces around the altar, Nicolás pointed to a very old and smoke-stained painting on the left-most retablo which serves as the backdrop for a life-size crucifix.
