In the traditional theology of many contemporary Maya in highland Guatemala, the world must undergo periodic renewal or it will lose its power to sustain life. In this presentation I'd like to describe a series of renewal ceremonies carried out among the modern Tz'utujil Maya of Santiago Atitlan, a community on the southern shore of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
